There have been a ton of creeping, hairy caterpillars all over the house lately. My kids have loved catching them in their bug catchers and taking care of them. Peyton and Brynn both caught one and Peyton's died. But Brynn's began spinning itself into a cacoon! We were so excited. Peyton was just asking me if I could buy him a caterpillar that will turn into a butterfly, and here we happened to have one of our own. At first, the kids were crying because they thought it had died, but we could tell it wasn't dead, so we gave it a few days and noticed it beginning to build its cacoon. We are so excited to see what our caterpillar will turn into!

I'm not sure what these hairy ones turn into but you need to go look on the milk weed plants along the road and the ditch banks. Look for caterpillars that are green, black, and white striped. Those are monarch caterpillars. Milk weed is the only thing they eat so they are easy to find and keep fed until they cacoon!
So exciting! This has been our fall tradition for the past couple of years. We have a milk week plant at the bottom of our driveway and for the last month Jaylee will scream (literally) from the backseat, "check for CATERPILLARS!" every time we go by. We haven't found any yet- need to go on a 4 wheeler ride to get some!
Good luck, can't wait to see what you hatch!
